Laboratory Ventilation Design Level Selector

Answer three questions about the work planned for a lab space to get a starting-point Laboratory Ventilation Design Level (LVDL-0 through LVDL-4), based on the ASHRAE / AIHA / ACS classification framework for laboratory airflow control systems.

01. Quantity of hazardous materials typically in use
The framework does not tie these bins to specific volumes. It only fixes one number: "laboratory scale" work is generally capped around 4 L (1 gal) per process. Where a given process sits between Negligible and Very large is a judgment call, usually made with EH&S during a hazard review, not a lookup table.
02. Potential for airborne generation during the work
03. Hazard severity of chemicals used or produced

Select an answer for all three questions to generate a recommended LVDL.
How to read this. The recommended level reflects the highest-risk answer among the three inputs, consistent with how the source framework scopes each LVDL by quantity, airborne-generation potential, and hazard severity together. This tool is a starting point for a conversation with EH&S and design engineers, not a substitute for a full laboratory-specific risk assessment. The underlying guidance is explicit that ventilation alone cannot address every chemical hazard and that a documented risk assessment should confirm the final design level.
